• Sony Xperia Z3+ Review

The long awaited Sony smartphone is here, but it’s not Xperia Z4 It’s Sony Xperia Z3+ Either consistent or reluctant, we can’t tell why Sony keep using the same design in Xperia Z3+ as Xperia Z series first generation.

But we can forgive that design persistence because this phone basically still bear the Z3 name. Sony Xperia Z3+ has a 5.2 inch display with wide area at the top and bottom of the screen. On the contrary, there’s a narrow bezel on right and left side of the screen. Curved edges on top, bottom, right and left of the 6.9mm body are designed for handling convenience. Sony brings the Xperia Z3+ Dual to Indonesia The dual nano SIM slot and a microSD is placed side by side on the left side of this phone and protected with a cap. While Power, Volume and a dedicated Camera button is placed on the right side. This phone also has waterproof capability with IP68 rating but the 3.5mm audio jack and the USB OTG port are capless. You still can take this phone for a swim, though. Surprisingly, Sony still offers a nearly extinct halter slot at the botttom side of Xperia Z3+. The shiny back side of this phone is wrapped with glass material which very smooth but leaves finger prints. It’s better to use a casing to protect it from getting scratched. As a flagship phone, Sony Xperia Z3+ comes with Android Lollipop 5.0.2.

You may notice slight differences like Notification and Recent Apps window compare to previous UI based on Android KitKat. Your daily activities (calories burnt, steps, walking or running duration even sleep duration) can be tracked with Lifelog apps. Now, it’s easier to browse your photo, video or music collection in Album and Music folder because you can sort them using the Menu which can be accessed by swiping from left side edge of the screen The UI also comes with small apps feature to run several certain apps simultaneously in window mode. Themes options are quite limited and you have to purchase some of them if you want to install it. Despite of overheat issue, Sony Xperia Z3+ is still powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset. Multitasking performance is not a problem for this phone thanks to its 2GHz octa-core CPU, 3GB RAM and 5.2 inch Full HD display. But software update to fix overheating issue slow down the processor clockspeed dragging AnTuTu benchmark score to just around 45.000 points, down from 60.000 points. The new score is even lower than Snapdragon 808 hexa-core CPU in LG G4. Most games run smoothly on this phone, but some games like Xenowerk feels a bit lag. Just playing games for more than 15 minutes and the back side of this phone quickly becomes hot even though the temperature doesn’t reach 50 degree Celsius, using an additional casing is highly recommended.

Xperia Z3+ has a Full HD display instead of Quad HD used by LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S6. If you’re used to look at Quad HD display, you’ll feel the Xperia Z3+ has lower quality display. Overall, Sony Triluminos display in this phone still delivers excellent images thanks to X-Reality and Super Vivid mode feature. Auto brightness feature for outdoor use is no longer availabe but Sony has replace it with Adaptive brightness feature. The 2930 mAh battery deserves a credit as Xperia Z3+ reliable power source, giving up to 15 hours life time and just under 5 hours screen-on time when running on 1 SIM card. And only takes 30 minutes to recharge the battery from 0-60% due to Quick Charge 2.0 feature. The main camera still use the G-Lens with f2.0 aperture, up to ISO 12800 and 20.7 MP resolution. Sony offers various photo mode for this phone, such as Superior auto which detects and adjust camera setting for optimal photo result, and Manual mode with different scene options which unfortunately won’t available if you’re choosing the maximum resolution. The Xperia Z3+ camera captures brighter images than the original object even in low light conditions. However, capturing close up image is not as good as LG G4, ASUS Zenfone 2 or Samsung Galaxy S6 camera. In terms of underwater capability, Sony Xperia Z3+ is still undefeatable. You can capture underwater images in 1.5m deth for up to 30 minutes with dedicated camera shutter button. Unfortunately, the phone temperature rising rapidly when we take selfies using the front facing camera. The same thing happen more often when we use the Augmented Reality mode for the main camera. After taking several selfies, a temperature warning window pops up. Hopefully Sony can resolve this issue with the next software update. That’s the fastest waterproof flagship smartphone of the year review.( Sony Xperia Z3+)
